What is Cigarette Gum?
Cigarette gum, or nicotine chewing gum, helps people stop smoking cigarettes. It is part of a type of medicine known as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).
How does it work?
Cigarette gum contains nicotine, the addictive substance in cigarettes. When you chew cigarette gum, nicotine is released into your bloodstream. This small amount of nicotine makes life much easier for those quitting smoking. It satisfies the craving for cigarettes, allowing your body a small amount of nicotine and alleviating withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, sweating, insomnia, depression, confusion, anxiety and irritability. It also acts as a substitute oral activity. Chewing cigarette gum helps to fill that need to 'have a cigarette'.
Benefits of using cigarette gum
" Smokers using cigarette gum are 1.5 to two times more
likely to give up smoking.
" Cigarette gum is proven to relieve the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
" Cigarette gum allows you to control the dosage of nicotine you get each day.
" Cigarette gum is more effective than patches as nicotine is absorbed faster through the gums.
" The amount of nicotine that is released when you chew cigarette gum is smaller than that found in regular cigarettes. This means that you can gradually decrease your dependence on nicotine, while avoiding withdrawal symptoms.
" The nicotine is absorbed through your mouth, meaning your lungs are saved the harmful damage that cigarette smoke causes.
" Cigarette gum does not contain any of the damaging carcinogenic chemicals like tar, nickel, carbonyl and others that are inhaled and absorbed by the body.
" Cigarette gum can be used in situations when smoking is not permitted, such as long airline flights or restaurants.
Using cigarette gum
To use cigarette gum, it should be substituted for cigarettes, either gradually or 'cold turkey'. Cigarette gum can be chewed whenever you feel the need to smoke, or every one to two hours. Do not exceed the packet directions.
Cigarette gum comes in two strengths - 2mg and 4mg. It is recommended to begin with the 2mg gum. However, if you are a heavy smoker (more than 25 cigarettes a day) it is possible to start with the 4mg gum.
To chew cigarette gum, you should chew slowly, until a tingling
sensation is felt or the peppery flavour is strong. Then place
(park) it in between your cheeks and gum, and the nicotine will
be released into the bloodstream, via the lining of your mouth.
When the tingling is almost gone, which should take about a minute,
begin slowly chewing again. Repeat this until the gum has lost
its flavour (around half an hour). Remember not to chew too quickly,
not to chew more than one at a time or not to use one gum too
soon after another.
